Are meditation apps the next sherlocked apps?

Apple’s watchOS 8 isn’t out yet, but if it hits later this year, there’s a good chance it will be upgraded with new guided meditation options as part of Fitness +, if Apple’s own leak is to be believed . So will apps like Calm and Headspace be the next to get Sherlocked?

“Sherlocked” is basically a term for an app that has been replaced with functionality natively added to an Apple device. There’s a whole story behind this, but that’s not important now. All you need to know is that a Sherlocked app tends to suffer because Apple either made it out of date or made it much less useful for some reason.

It makes a lot of sense to add guided meditations, or as Apple seems to call it, audio meditations to Fitness +. After all, there are already guided workouts and guided hikes. Letting someone whisper in their ear while doing your daily meditation is arguably the next logical step here.

When it comes to sherlocking, people like Calm and Headspace are most likely to suffer. According to AppAnnie numbers, Calm is the second highest revenue app in its category, while Headspace is fifth. And this category not only includes meditation apps, but the entire health and fitness category. These include Weight Watchers, Strava, Peloton, and more. It’s a tough category to come out on top.

Since two of the top five top-selling fitness apps are guided meditations, it makes sense to use them to get people into Fitness +. At $ 9.99 a month, Fitness + is likely the same or cheaper than dedicated apps. Will it have the same features? We don’t know yet, but Headspace and Calm don’t offer guided workouts or guided walks, so “You pay your money and make your choice,” as someone somewhere once said. Will the prospect of Apple Fitness + guided meditations be enough to get people to find the best Apple Watch deals on the best Apple Watch? Maybe, maybe not.

Of course we don’t know when that will happen. Apple removed the mention of audio meditations from its Platforms State of the Union video earlier today as it is clearly unwilling to be the talk of the town. We’ll just have to wait and see if it will appear in a later beta of watchOS 8.

We will certainly not be the only ones watching. Some will also hold their breath.
